FPCAN’s You Are Not Dead

fake, writing, you are not dead

To complement the You Are Not Dead seminar experience going down in Vancouver May 27 – June 5, Daniel Reetz and I have published You Are Not Dead: A Guide to Modern Living (the Canadian Edition).

While a small quantity will be available for sale at the play, this is print on demand, baby, so everyone can get in on the action. Read more about (and BUY! BUY! BUY!) the book at our publishing press, The Author Is Dead.

Those who I occasionally see in person may also contact me or leave a comment below to buy a copy from me in the meatspace (this latter option may take a few weeks due to Things and Stuff, but comes with such advantages as Increased Revenue for the Fakeproject Corporation, the human touch and my precious precious autograph).

Regarding the “publishing press,” maximum control of your work requires registering your own ISBN, and when you have your own ISBN, you basically have your own publishing company (minus a million things, of course, but in name, sure sure). In addition, for whatever backward reason, 1 ISBN costs $125 while 10 cost $250. While I am less aspiring publisher–author than thrifty shopper, I nonetheless have 9 more ISBNs burning a hole in my wherever-it-is-you-store-ISBNs.

Yay? I think so. Yay!

you are not dead: a play for modest giving

fake, vancouver, you are not dead

You Are Not Dead: A Guide to Modern Living is becoming a play!
In 2008 Daniel Reetz and I released this music, image and text collaboration online for free. It filtered through Vancouver peripheries into the imagination of Danielle Marleau of Black Pants and is being adapted as a stage production for premiere mid-May in Vancouver (final dates and venue to be confirmed).

The ingenious premise turns my satirical self help guide into a live-action seminar run by representatives from the Canadian Chapter of the Fakeproject Corporation of America, with Dan’s images incorporated into a devious and dysfunctional PowerPoint. The project also has on board brilliant actor Ryan Beil. This guy is amazing—the Corporation couldn’t be more pleased with its international representation.

With the help of Danielle and a dramaturg, I’ve toiled to retool the guide into a script to the best of my so-not-a-playwright abilities, updating the content to reflect the Canadian condition and sensibilities, to the best of my three-year observations (what, youall thought I was there for library school?). The guide was originally penned in 2005—suffice it to say, post–second-term election Bush Administration America required a much different tone than 2010 Olympic comedown high Vancouver. But so much of it still strikes raw and true, five years later and in a different though certainly not dissimilar culture.

This has been in the works for nearly a year. There have been hints here and there in various ethertubes but no official announcement due to the uncertainty whether wow, is this really happening?

Yes. Yes, it is. And you can help. Black Pants is raising money to mount the show, with fundraisers held in Vancouver (check out a nice write-up about the project and a benefit event in the Granville Secret City blog). You can give via PayPal directly to Black Pants. Every bit helps and is much appreciated! (Clicking donate below will send you to Black Pants; click their donate button to get to PayPal!)

Donations are investments.
Labors of love are the hardest to birth.
And thanks. Updates on this project will be posted as they happen!

UPDATE: Unfortunately Ryan Beil will not be a representative after all. Now on board are Adam Bergquist and Jessica Harvey, and they are *muah!* fantastic.

fake, music, writing, you are not dead

As many of you know, I have enjoyed a long-time, time-and-again collaboration with musician and artist Daniel Reetz of the Fakeproject Corporation of America. After five years of dereconstructing sounds, sharpening words, pushing pixels and losing ground to years-long diversions, we are pleased at last to present You Are Not Dead: A Guide to Modern Living, a project of music and writing to severice good citizens on rightful roads to living well.

I wrote the guide; Dan wrote the music and imaged the manipulations; we both imagined, idead and applied our versions of vision, while a handful of others contributed their talents in small but crucial ways. So gather ’round the tolerated ones and maximize the volume. The project is available for streaming, viewing and download at http://www.fakeproject.com/you_are_not_dead/

Please forward this to anyone who might enjoy it.
Comments to me or Dan (www.danreetz.com) are most welcome.
